Is Fish Oil Really That Important

IS FISH OIL REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?
By Dr. Neil Levin DC, CFT.
Yes!!
I tell my patients all the time that fish oil is the single most important nutrient you can take. Let’s review why.
Just 150 to 200 years ago people ate meat from cows or wild game that grazed on grass and ate leaves and berries. The eggs they ate were from birds that free ranged in the fields, scratching at the ground for food. These animals were lean with low body fat; yet because of their diets the meat from these animals supplied a good level of healthy omega 3 fats.
Today, cows and chickens are fed grains which are rich in Omega 6 fats, but low in Omega 3 fats. They are also given steroids to fatten them up, and antibiotics to prevent bacterial infections due to overcrowded conditions. The result is that cows now have high body fat (up to 25-30%). Steak derived from these animals is high in saturated fat and low in the healthy Omega 3 fats. Grain fed chickens, while lower in saturated fat, are also low in Omega 3’s.
This represents a dramatic change in the proportion of essential fatty acids that we consume. For instance, a free range chicken egg from a bird that is actually “free ranging,” i.e. eating grass, insects and worms in the field, will have about 15 times the amount of Omega 3’s that a commercial egg has. We also tend to eat very little fish, which are high in the desirable EPA and DHA Omega 3 fatty acids.
The scenario gets even worse. At the same time we have been consuming less of the Omega 3’s, we are consuming much higher levels of the Omega 6 family of fats. The vegetable oils from corn, soy, safflower, sunflower, and cottonseed are all rich in omega 6 fats. These represent the lion’s share of the oils that are consumed in America. They are in the dressings, processed foods, fast foods, pastas, breads, french fries etc. This is a radical shift in the type of essential fatty acids that we consume, over a very short period of time. Our bodies have not had time to adapt to this dramatic dietary shift and we are paying for it with our health.
The omega-6 fats and omega-3 fats compete for the same enzymes. When the delicate balance of these fatty acids is off we don’t make the appropriate healthy hormones (prostoglandins) that the omega-3 class of fats should create.
Researchers calculate that people used to consume a ratio of Omega 6 fats to Omega 3 fats of 1 or 2:1. Now, with the changes in our food supply and eating habits, our ratio is closer to 20:1. That represents about a 500% change in the ratio of fats that we eat. This dietary change manifests itself throughout our bodies. It has a negative impact on every one of our 6 trillion cells.
The brain is dependent upon dietary intake of DHA to create nerve cell membranes with the right balance of essential fatty acids to enhance function. These membranes should be rich in DHA so that they are flexible and fluid. At the synapse, where one brain neuron “speaks” to another, and dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine and other neurotransmitters need to flow easily and quickly through these membranes it is especially important that these membranes are high in DHA.
Yet, our diets starve our brains of DHA. This creates a real risk of reduced thinking, memory, verbal skills, vision and mood. Do you want to run the risk of thinking with less efficiency? Do you want to run the risk of cognitive decline as you get older? I’m sure you don’t.
The good news is that study after study show positive mental changes and cognitive protection, with the addition of Omega 3 fatty acids. These benefits include: improved cognition (thinking), short and long term memory, mood, verbal skills and the ability to rapidly solve problems.
In infants who consume high levels of DHA, a normal component of breastmilk, researchers note improved brain development, visual acuity and eye hand coordination. So much so, that DHA, is now added to infant formula.
As if that weren’t enough of a reason to supplement with Omega 3’s, EPA and DHA from fish oil also positively influence triglyceride levels, blood pressure, HDL cholesterol, circulation, heart rhythm, reduce our risk of blood clots and arrhythmias, protect us from several types of cancer, protect vision, strengthen our bones, improve our skin and reduce inflammation throughout our bodies including our joints.
These positive benefits are a mainly a result of balancing the fatty acid levels in our cell membranes. These membranes are very biologically active. They produce ecosinoid hormones and regulate the flow of nutrients and waste in and out of our cells. If you don’t consume enough Omega 3’s they become stiffer and less able to perform their jobs well. The levels of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats in the membrane also influence the types of ecosinoid hormones produced.
When we supplement with Omega 3’s we bring balance back to these membranes allowing them to produce a better mix of hormones leading to the positive changes which researchers are finding and which are outlined above.
Get your omega 3’s from fish oil rather than flax. The omega-3 provided by flax oil is ALA. It is hard for the human body to convert ALA to the types of omega 3’s which our bodies utilize, namely EPA & DHA. The conversion rate is only about 2-15% and decreases with age and disease. So choose fish derived omega 3’s to achieve the benefits described in this article.
Take at least 1000 mgs. of EPA and DHA per day. Read labels. Turn the bottle over and look for the amount of EPA and DHA per capsule. Check and make sure that the amounts given are per capsule. If the amounts provided are from 2 or 3 capsules, do the math. Add the EPA and DHA together and make sure they add up to at least 1000 mgs. The supplement should be pharmaceutical grade, guaranteed to be free of mercury and other contaminants.
It will take about 2 months to make substantial changes in the fatty acid distribution of your cell membranes, however many of my patients and I have noticed improved cognition and skin in just a week or two.
Consult with your physician before adding Omega 3’s if you are taking blood thinners.

Digesting Your Food with East and Comfort

Digesting Your Food with Ease and Comfort
Posted-5/26/08
Feeling bloated during and after meals? Is gas a problem? Does the food just sit there? You're not the only one. I hear these complaints regularly. In fact millions of Americans have constipation and intestinal discomfort...soon we'll examine some of the causes.
Think of the digestive tract as one 30 foot long tube traveling through your body. It’s surface area is about 600 square meters which is approximately the size of a baseball diamond!! Strictly speaking, it is actually outside the body as it communicates with the outside world on both ends. If you eat lots of high fiber healthy foods including, fruits and vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains; eat several servings of lean protein; drink 6-8 glasses of water or healthy fluids and get adequate physical activity, you probably don’t have problems with your digestive system. The problem is that most of my patients don’t fit into this category. Let’s dispense with the anatomy lessons and cut to the chase. Here are a few of the main GI problems along with some solutions.
Constipation:
One of the main causes is a lack of Fiber do to not eating enough fruits, vegetables & legumes. Most people don’t get close to the recommended 7 servings of fruits and vegetables for women and 9 for men. In addition most of my patients don’t eat beans, nuts and seeds. So our diet is lacking in fiber. The best way to solve this problem is to consume more of these foods. Some of my patients can do this yet others have trouble. My favorite fiber supplement (which I helped to formulate) is FiberBiotics. First of all it’s delicious. Secondly, it has a full 6.6 grams of soluble fiber per serving. In addition, it supplies 800 million certified Colony Forming Units of GI friendly bacteria (Probiotics). This is a powerful 1-2 punch that will help to knock out constipation by bulking up your stool while restoring your normal gut flora. Triple Greens is another favorite. Featuring 3 grams of soluble fiber along with over 3 dozen super foods to super charge your health at every level.
Dehydration is another reason for constipation. Try to drink at least 6 glasses of water (or clear fluids such as green tea) per day. When you don’t have enough water in your body your stool becomes hard and difficult to pass.
Most people don’t know this but inadequate physical activity is a big reason for constipation. Just like skeletal muscles tend to get weaker when you don’t exercise; similar changes take place in the muscles around you intestine and colon. So if you have problems with constipation, get some more physical activity, you’re whole body will thank you for it in so many ways.
“The Food Just Sits There” /”I Feel Bloated”/ “I’m Not Digesting My Food”: These are statements that I hear all the time. Let’s look at some reasons:
Some of my patients don’t chew their food well. Remember that the digestive process begins in the mouth. The teeth need to mechanically break down the food you eat, while the salivary glands moisten the food with saliva and the first digestive enzyme, alpha amylase. During this process larger chunks of food are broken down into smaller bits that the stomach can further break apart. This creates hundreds of times more surface area for your stomach acid and digestive enzymes to work on. So chew your food well; it’s a critical part of the digestive process.
As we get older (and wiser), we produce less, not more, stomach acid and digestive enzymes. These substances are responsible for breaking down our proteins, fats and carbohydrates into tiny particles that our intestines can absorb. Our stomach alone produces 2-3 quarts of digestive juices per day!! However, the hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes produced by the stomach and pancreas become dilute with age. This creates an interesting quandary to ponder. Why are our doctors and drug companies pushing acid blocking drugs such as Tums, Rolaids and a Little Purple Pill, when we need more acid and enzymes, not less? These substances are actually further hampering an already limited digestive function, not helping it. Remember, when you were young you had stronger stomach acid and more powerful enzymes. Yet you had no GI upset or acid reflux and digested your food with ease.We need strong acid in the stomach, like we had in our youth, to create an acidic environment which kills pathogens in our food (bacteria, parasites, viruses) and breaks down protein and fat. Strong pancreatic and intestinal enzymes are able to break down protein, fat and carbohydrates into tiny digestible particles. But what happens as we get into our 40’s, 50’s and 60’s and our digestive juices are not as potent as they once were? The above processes don’t take place as efficiently, and we feel bloated and uncomfortable. The food isn’t being efficiently handled, but is instead sitting in our intestines and actually beginning to rot. What do we do about this? Try Digestive enzymes first, and if that doesn’t completely resolve your digestive problems, try using Betaine Hydrochloride as well. I like to start my patients with 2-3 Ultrazyme, digestive enzyme capsules with a big meal and 1-2 with a small meal. You can take a few more or less. Experiment, how you feel after eating will tell you if you’re using enough. If this doesn’t do the trick, I have them add the Betaine Hydrochloride. We use the Warming Test to determine the appropriate amount: First of all, only take Betaine Hydrochloride with food and never chew it. That said, start with one during a meal, and work you way up. Keep increasing the number of capsules that you take with subsequent meals until you feel a slight warming sensation in you r stomach. That warming sensation tells you that you have taken one too many. So reduce that number by one capsule and you have your dosage (it may be 5-6 with a normal sized meal). As you are using the enzymes and betaine hydrochloride with good results, you can try to reduce your dosage to see if you remain comfortable. When you begin to feel like your not digesting well again, you know you’re not taking enough. At that point bump the dose up again and there you have it. Your minimum dosage to properly digest your food.

GERD - Reflux:
GERD is a very common problem which should be taken seriously. In people with GERD the esophageal sphincter (the valve that connects the esophagus with the stomach) doesn't work well and allows the acidic contents of the stomach to move backward up into the esophagus. If this process goes on unchecked over time the cells lining the esophagus can change (Barrett’s Esophagus) and in rare cases lead to cancer of the esophagus. So if you suffer with GERD it makes sense to minimize the problem. Here are some ways to do it:*Utilize the procedures that I have outlined above. When there is less back pressure from food sitting in your stomach and intestines, reflux is minimized.*Avoid foods that trigger symptoms such as alcohol, spicy foods, fatty foods or acidic foods.*Try eating smaller meals*Don’t eat too close to bed time*Lose weight if appropriate*Wear loose-fitting clothes*Raise the top of the bed so that when you’re lying down, gravity helps to keep the contents of the stomach from refluxing up into the esophagus.
Proper digestion, absorption and elimination of the food that we eat is critical. This is were health begins. We need to absorb the nutrients from the food to build our cells, tissues and organs. We need the vitamins and minerals to optimize our energy and vitality. Try to make healthy choices. Eat lots of Fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Try and include heart healthy nuts, seeds and legumes. Choose only whole grains when using carbs such as breads and pastas. Try to reduce your overall carbohydrate consumption from grains, such as breads, pastas, pastries, muffins etc, as most people eat far too many grain products.
If you’re not using a good multivitamin, pharmaceutical grade fish oil and a healthy green drink, add them to your daily routine. These 3 nutrients are critical. I’m sure that if you adopt some of these recommendations you will feel much more comfortable, have more energy and feel sharper.
I hope that you find this advice to be helpful. If your symptoms persist make sure that you consult a qualified health care provider to fully diagnose and treat you GI problems.

Green Tea

10/15/08
Green Tea Phytosome The Wonder Weight Loss Nutrient
The Chinese and Japanese have known about the benefits of green tea for thousands of years. I’m sure many of you are already enjoying the benefits of green tea. But now a new technology has been created that literally has shaken the green tea community to its foundation. This wonderful new technology is called: Green Tea Phytosome and it literally changes everything (read on).
The Benefits of Green Tea
For those who aren’t familiar with the benefits of green tea polyphenols, especially the most important one: EGCG or Epigallocatechin gallate, following is a list. All of these benefits are backed by over 3000 peer reviewed articles and studies at the library of Congress:
Weight Management (next page)
Healthy Immunity
Powerful Antioxidant
Cardiovascular Health
Improved Cholesterol Levels
Improved Triglyceride Levels
Energy, Energy, Energy
Improved Metabolism
Enhanced Fat Burning
Healthy Blood Sugar Levels
Joint Health Benefits
Promotes Healthy Digestion
Protects Muscles During Work-out
Healthy Memory and Cognition
Reduced risk of many cancers
Reduced risk of stroke
Improved Vascular Health
Healthy Blood Pressure
Green tea is one of the most powerful antioxidants available. Research from the University of Kansas indicates that the antioxidant potential of green tea is 100 times greater than vitamin C, 25 times greater that vitamin E and twice as strong as resveratrol (1), the molecule from red wine that many scientists feel is responsible for keeping the french lean and healthy, even though they have a high fat diet.
The problem with green tea in the past was low absorption by the human GI tract. The green tea polyphenols, including EGCG the premier green tea phytonutrient, are large molecules. Studies indicate that only about 10% of these polyphenols get absorbed from the digestive tract into the body. That means that about 90% of these valuable health promoting molecules pass right out of your system without imparting their positive benefits. However, now there’s new technology. It’s called Green Tea Phytosome and it’s a game changer.
What is Green Tea Phytosome and why is it Better?
We have to thank some brilliant scientists at a large pharmaceutical company in Milan, Italy for this breakthrough. They created a way to attach polyphenols from green tea to phosphatidycholine (PC). PC is a fatty acid that makes up the cell membranes in our body. Because of this, our digestive system absorbs it readily, dragging the green tea polyphenols along for the ride. Studies show that this increases the absorption of these polyphenols by more than double. These same studies confirm that the EGCG concentration in human blood increased by two fold for 6 hours (2). Bottom line: with this new phytosome technology you’re absorbing twice as much of the EGCG and other green tea polyphenols gleaning dramatically more benefit. This makes green tea phytosome a much better value.
If I’m Already Taking a Green Tea Supplement, Should I Switch?
Absolutely!! If you’re already taking a green tea supplement, I applaud your sensibility. You've recognized the incredible benefits backed up by over 3000 peer reviewed studies and articles. Yet now, with Green Tea Super Formula you absorb twice as much of the green tea polyphenols, bumping the benefits way up. I’ve encouraged all of my patients, family and friends to switch to this new technology during the past month.
Losing Weight with Green Tea
A new study just published in the Journal Integrative Nutrition (2008) has given dieters reason to cheer. Researchers worked with 100 overweight subjects ages 25-60 (20-40% over their ideal weight). Fifty people took 300mgs of green tea phytosome and 50 took placebo. The women reduced their caloric intake to 1350 calories while the men ingested 1850 calories. After 90 days individuals in the group taking placebo lost on average 10lbs while the those in the group taking the green tea phytosome lost 30lbs!!! That’s 3 times as much weight loss with no additional exercise or calorie restriction!!! In addition the people taking the green tea phytosome saw significant reductions in cholesterol and triglyceride levels and lost more inches around the waist 3.
This is by far the most exciting study that I have seen on weight loss in people utilizing an all natural supplement. At this point I don’t start anyone on a weight loss program without first starting them on Green Tea Super Formula, which uses the exact same green tea phytosome in the exact same dosage as this study.
No Side Effects – Excellent Side benefits
The great news about using Green Tea Super Formula for weight loss is that unlike many prescription weight loss medications, there are no side effects. Conversely, if you refer to the beginning of this article, you will see a long list of benefits gained by taking green tea. This list of benefits is backed up by over 3000 peer reviewed articles and research papers at the library of congress.
SelenoExcell & VitaBerry
In addition Green Tea Super Formula contains two more cutting edge nutrients: SelenoExcell and VitaBerry. SelenoExcell, a form of selenium, is the same exact nutrient the National Institutes of Health along with the National Cancer Institute are now studying to confirm the anticancer benefits found for the prostate and colon. The original study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that men taking 200 micrograms of SelenoExcell had a 63% reduction in prostate cancer incidence. In addition the Selenium group had reductions in total cancer incidence including lung and colon cancer. There was also a 17% reduction in all-cause mortality (meaning 17% fewer people in the selenium group died during the study)(4). We have added the full 200 micrograms to the Green Tea Super Formula (the identical amount from the study). In addition, Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that reduces hydrogen peroxide radicals in the mitochondria and cytoplasm of the cell. This is critical to maintain mitochondrial function and therefore healthy energy levels as we age. The mitochondria create the energy for all cellular and therefore, bodily functions.
VitaBerry is a wonderful compilation of eight high antioxidant berries including: Wild blueberry extract, Grape and grape seed extract, Raspberry fruit and raspberry seed extract, Cranberry, Prune, Tart cherry, Wild bilberry and Strawberry.
Together the synergy of the berry phytonutrients, the selenium and the green tea polyphenols are a powerful antioxidant punch offering excellent protection from the increased free radical damage we are subject to as we age.
Green Tea Super Formula with its numerous benefits including enhanced metabolism and fat burning leading to enhanced weight loss is one of my top 3 nutrients. The two other supplements I highly recommend everyone take are Omega 3’s (at least 500mgs of a combination of EPA and DHA) and a good multivitamin that contains at least 1000 IU's of vitamin D. These are your core, foundational nutrients along with calcium if you're a woman.
Don't hesistate to contact me if you have any questions on this material. I love to help.
Eat right, exercise, have a positive mental attitude and supplement wisely…That’s how we'll age gracefully, together.
